These natural Purple whimsical flowers are the variety of " sweetgrass" used in the historical crafting of the Basket weavers of the Gullah culture. The gullah are originally from west African coast and during there enslavement here in the low country or coastal lands they have remained true to there basket weaving traditions passed on over 5 generations ago. The women are the main weavers in current times. The men harvest 4 plants growing native to this land . The women weave the beautiful baskets and sell them to be still the #1 tourist supporting income for over 100years. Only plants wildcraftedarw used to make these amazing pieces of art. LongleafPine,Bullrush( a Reedlikemarsh grass) palmetto hearts( only long ones) and the cord Sweetgrass. I've harvested for the ladies for a couple years. After seeing that the areas they once frequently harvested from , were sadly dissappeaing due to the extreme growth of the Charleston area. After being friends with a particularlady of Mount pleasant weavers I realized also that the men were getting old and the younger ones were definitely not into their grandparents culture enough to impact the shortage of there harvesting. So I took it on to look for any available sweetgrass plants that I could grab portions from to bring to them.the marsh grass has been on the watch list for almost in dangered species during years2003 2004. It's made a come back due to the areas replanting it for highways, businessparking lots, yards, malls, water parks. You will spit it most every place. There is a white golden flower varietyand a magenta purple as well. The sweetgrass symbolizes strength to the gullah and humble beginnings.Native Americans have received it as a messenger plantfrom the creator. It is used to carry up prayers with good spirits behind it. Blessing and sending upto the heaven's the way the native Americans still use it. Smudging with it as well as using it for a tea are traditions as well. These are delicate bxi let the flowers flow anddidnt preserve them in resin. They are worn on special occasions bc of there delicate nature. They are secured with alloys and hematite atop and below hangs 3 inches of sweetgrasss plume. Lightweight and long.
